River Fishing- Jerkbaits
Jerkbaits are a commonly accepted presentation in winter time but are also one of the best year round bait presentation on regional river systems.
Jerkbaits are a popular choice for fishing for Smallmouth bass. Here are a few tips on how to use them effectively:
Look for deeper water: In the winter, smallmouth bass will often move into deeper water to avoid the cold water temperatures. Look for areas with drop-offs, ledges, or other structure that can provide cover and protection.
Use a medium-light to medium-heavy rod and reel: You'll want to use a rod and reel that can handle the weight of the jerkbait and the size of the smallmouth bass you're targeting.
Choose the right color: Jerkbaits come in a variety of colors, so choose one that closely matches the color of the forage in the area you're fishing.
Use a slow retrieve: In the winter, smallmouth bass will often be less active, so a slow retrieve is more effective.
Fish around structure: Fish around structure such as rocks, logs, weed beds or even fallen trees. Smallmouth bass will often hold tight to structure in the winter.
Fish at different depths: Fish the jerkbait at different depths to see where the fish are holding. In the winter, smallmouth bass will often hold in the deeper part of the water column.
Vary your retrieve speed: Mix up your retrieve speed to see what the fish prefer. Some fish will respond better to a faster retrieve, while others will respond better to a slower retrieve.
Fish during the warmest part of the day: Smallmouth bass will be more active during the warmest part of the day, so try fishing during the late morning or early afternoon.
By following these tips, you'll be well on your way to catching smallmouth bass with jerkbaits in the winter especially but also year round. Remember that the key is to fish slow and fish around structure with the Jerkbait because truth of the matter is most will not throw them near structure or docks as well.
